The U9 program is a progressive, learn-to-play hockey program. Players learn through practice drills and skill sessions, as well as informal games. The skills of skating, puck control, passing and shooting are introduced and refined one step at a time. U9 games will be played as half‐ice, four‐on‐four format.
For more information on the U9 program, please use the Hockey Canada and Hockey Eastern Ontario links below.
The game of hockey is for kids. Kids play the game because they love it and because it is fun. As parents we must all realize that, for kids, positive participation is always more important than excellence. The personal and social development that comes from being part of a team is one of the most enriching experiences offered by the game. We must continue to live the values of fun and fair play, respect, integrity and teamwork with a balanced perspective of expectations and definition of success. We must celebrate our good experiences with this great game.
We have returned to 3 installments for those families who wish to not pay in one lump sum.

Fundraising fee
This is paid at the time of registration. The fundraising fee has increased to $100 per player for the season. If you choose not to pay the fee, it is mandatory that your player participates in two fundraising endeavors through RMHA – such as TAG Day and selling raffle tickets. If you pay the fee, you will be exempt from having to participate in fundraising activities during the season.
All U9-U18 players are required to have an RMHA evaluation/practice jersey. If you have an evaluation jersey from last year and it still fits, you are not required to purchase a new evaluation jersey for this season. If your player does not have one or would like to replace theirs from last year, you must check the box and add a jersey ($25) to your registration. This jersey is used during evaluations and may later be used for practices. Your player will keep this jersey.
Throughout the season, you should expect a few additional expenses that will be handled by your team manager.
U9 teams - hockey socks $25, shared cost of 2nd Jamboree (approx. $50-75 each) and $40-$50 home tournament fee.
The main fundraisers for U9 teams are their home tournament and the 67s experience. Team fundraising is not permitted outside of this.
Home Tournaments are a lot of work and require a significant amount of planning and support of volunteers. The team managers for each division will run their own home tournament. Volunteers are essential to running a successful tournament. Parents will be asked to volunteer for shifts at raffle tables, bake sale etc. A home tournament fee will be collected from each player to help with the expenses of preparing for and running a home tournament. All proceeds from your home tournament go back to your team to offset the cost of away tournaments, team activities and year end gifts/party
Safety is always a priority. All players must wear full hockey equipment on the ice. The following equipment is required. Players will not be permitted on the ice if any piece is missing.
(RMHA has goalie equipment that may be borrowed for the season)
Your player will also require a hockey bag for their equipment.
Play It Again Sports is a great economical option when looking for equipment. Canadian Tire also has starter kits for younger players.
All U9 players are required to have an RMHA evaluation/practice jersey. This can be purchased during registration for $25. If you purchased one last season, you may continue to use that jersey and do not require a new one.
All U9 teams will use RMHA jerseys for games. Game jersey are not to be worn during practices. Jerseys will be returned to the team manager after each game. They do not go home with players.
All U9 players require RMHA socks to match the jerseys. These can be purchased for a fee of approximately $25 at the beginning of the season through your team manager.
In U9 you can expect 2-3 ice times a week – often Saturday and/or Sunday morning and a weeknight. League games start in November and will be scheduled against District 5 teams between Arnprior, Cobden, Pembroke, Petawawa, Deep River, Eganville and Barry’s Bay. Throughout the season, you may also have some exhibition games scheduled as well as 2 Jamborees away plus our home Jamboree tournament.
Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) requires at least one parent or guardian of a participant to complete the on-line “Respect in Sport for hockey parents program”. If you have completed the course for another child, you are required to sign into your account and add your new players. Please ensure that you are choosing Renfrew MHA as the association.
